FLD Day At the Statehouse

FLD Day At the Statehouse

The IBA gave members of its Future Leadership Division an up-close look this year at the chaos that can come about in the final days of a legislative session. The annual FLD Day at the Statehouse was held on Tuesday, March 5, just days before the General Assembly adjourned sine die on March 8. More than 60 members from throughout the state traveled to our state’s capital to network, learn about grassroots advocacy and see the historic Indiana Statehouse.

FLD Advisory Board President Michael Clampitt of North Salem State Bank set the tone, emphasizing the importance of being involved with grassroots advocacy and fostering connections within the FLD. Attendees then enjoyed a short competitive trivia icebreaker about Indiana’s legislative process and other Statehouse topics, setting a spirited atmosphere for learning and interaction.

The IBA’s government relations team explained what they do as lobbyists on behalf of the state’s banking industry to ensure an environment in which banks can succeed. Led by Dax Denton, IBA chief policy officer, and Ross Teare, IBA vice president – government relations, bankers learned why it is important for them to connect to the legislative process, form relationships with lawmakers and the steps they can take to get involved. A short summary of major banking issues at the Statehouse was also included.

The event shifted gears next with an insightful discussion with political commentator Abdul-Hakim Shabazz, who shared his thoughts on the major events of the 2024 legislative session, analysis of the upcoming elections and answered questions from attendees. Rep. Mike Speedy, R-Indianapolis, joined next to discuss his role as chair of the House Financial Institutions Committee, how he came to serve in the General Assembly and where he believes the state will need to focus in the future.

After a networking lunch, Indiana Department of Financial Institutions Director Tom Fite greeted attendees and provided an informative overview of the DFI. Fite discussed how the DFI works with financial institutions and some of the major areas of focus in the future to ensure that Indiana banks remain healthy. The group then left the Hilton Indianapolis Hotel and took a short walk to the Statehouse, where they had the opportunity to view the House of Representatives conduct business, tour the Statehouse and meet with elected officials.

Thank you to all the banks who made it a priority to attend the 2024 FLD Day at the Statehouse. It was another successful event, including several first-time attendees. If you missed this year’s FLD Day at the Statehouse, be sure to join us for our FLD networking reception at the IBA Mega Conference on May 7.
