Horizon Bank, Michigan City, awarded a $5,000 grant to The Salvation Army of Michigan City in support of its Weekend Backpack Feeding Program. The program provides critical weekend meals for children in the Michigan City area who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless or facing food insecurity. Each week during the school year, children receive six nutritious meals. The goal is to make sure they have breakfast, lunch and dinner on both Saturday and Sunday when school meals are not available.
The bank also came together for its third annual Horizon Cares Day on Tuesday, Sept. 16. For one day each year, all branches close to allow employees the chance to dedicate their time to the neighborhoods they serve. This year, nearly 800 employees volunteered with more than 80 nonprofit organizations across Indiana and Michigan. From food pantries and assisting at shelters to lending a hand at Habitat for Humanity sites, the projects focused on meeting local needs and creating lasting impact. As part of Horizon Cares Day, there was also an awards program where eight employees were honored with Community Service and Leadership awards, recognizing their exceptional dedication and highlighting those who go above and beyond in serving others.
North Salem State Bank’s Commitment to the Community group volunteered and raised money for the Boone County Cancer Society during its annual Battle of the BBQ event and You’re Not Alone 5K on Aug. 9. Bankers helped guide runners and walkers along the 5K course in the morning, then served up snow cones and cotton candy at the barbecue that evening. A bank employee, Nikki Hollingsworth, is the Boone County Cancer Society’s board president.
