What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?
My first job was at a video rental store. Remember the era of renting movies to watch at home? (Now you know I am NOT young!) I learned I had a passion for getting to know people, organization, presentation of the store and helping customers – even if it was just selecting a movie!
What drew you to banking?
Like many, I am an accidental banker! I thought I wanted to work in the retail industry, but the hours were difficult as a single mom with three children. My mom suggested banking because the work schedule, professional environment and my passion for serving others would be a good fit.
What recent professional challenge taught you an important lesson, and how did you overcome it?
I have had many professional challenges over my career. The one that stands out the most to me was our core conversion. I learned how to collaborate, build consensus, efficiently problem-solve and maintain a positive attitude in the midst of challenges. These skills were extremely useful during COVID!
"Even greater than Melissa’s knowledge and expertise is her passion for people. She is a servant leader in every sense of the term, always putting others first with a heartfelt desire to see them grow and develop into their very best selves."
– Lisa Arnold, President and CEO, Home Bank, Martinsville
How do you stay innovative and forward-thinking in an ever-evolving industry?
I love to hear about new digital products and services to stay ahead of the ever-evolving changes in our industry. I believe that understanding what is possible helps you create better solutions to today’s challenges while preparing for a better way to serve our customers or staff.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in banking?
My best piece of advice is to work hard and love people! Also, be sure to find a mentor, someone you trust and who is willing to teach you good problem-solving skills, push you to think big and encourage you.
If you weren’t a banker, what would you do for a living?
I’m pretty sure that I would be an interior designer or florist! I would use my creative abilities to create beautiful spaces or arrangements! I have the ability to see the end result and the stubborn will to see it through!
Who or what inspires you?
I am blessed to have many people in my life who inspire me, so to name one is too hard. My parents inspire me with their dedication and commitment to family and Jesus! My mentors, Dan Moore and Lisa Arnold, inspire me to achieve accomplishments I never thought were possible professionally.
How do you define success?
The definition of success to me is using your uniquely created talents for the benefit of loving others well. Success is listening, caring for others more than yourself, having a positive attitude, helping others through difficulties, and encouragement to achieve something they didn’t think was possible.
What’s your go-to comfort food?
I probably have WAY too many of these! My favorite meal is meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans and yeast rolls! I LOVE cookies, especially oatmeal and monster cookies, but my mom’s cinnamon rolls are the BEST!
What do you do for fun when you’re not working?
When I am not working, you can find me outside working in my flower bed, feeding the birds or walking. I also love spending time with my family, which includes my parents and my 12 (13 is on the way) grandchildren. I love to do Zumba, cook or redecorate a room! My favorite vacation spot is the beach!
