Taking It Easy

Cheryl Sondgeroth, vice president, computer operations officer and information security officer at The Farmers and Merchants Bank, Boswell, will retire from the bank effective July 31. She spent her entire 45-year career with the bank, starting as a teller and working her way up through bookkeeping, loan clerk, trust & stockholder accounting and digital banking. Sondgeroth volunteers at numerous local organizations, including the local high school. She is a member of the IBA 40 Year Club.

Question: A customer was recently the victim of a phishing fraud where they were convinced by a caller claiming to be with our bank to log in to a webpage and provide their access credentials – the fraudster then initiated a large wire transfer to a foreign account. The customer wants the bank to reimburse them for the loss. Who bears the loss of a fraudulent wire transfer under these circumstances?
