Legislative Day 2025

Lawmakers are navigating a new governor at the helm and a restricted budget as forecasts predict lower tax receipts, particularly in the second year of the next biennial budget cycle. With several non-budget bills that could also impact financial institutions in the state, there was plenty to talk about on Feb. 4 at the IBA’s Legislative Briefing and Reception. Nearly 150 bankers and associate members attended the annual event at the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis for insights on 20 bills of interest to our industry and to engage in grassroots advocacy with dozens of lawmakers who came for the evening reception.

In a Jan. 14, 2025, opinion letter, the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor clarified some thorny questions regarding the interplay between the Family Medical Leave Act and state or local mandated or provided family and medical leave laws. Specifically, the DOL addressed whether an employer can require an employee to substitute their accrued paid time off (vacation and/or sick time) when both the FMLA and state/local family and medical leave laws are in play.
